What is a common source of post-operative pain?

Over-extension of the pack onto the soft tissue is recognized as a common source of post-operative pain because it can create pressure and irritation on surrounding tissues. When a pack or dressing is applied too tightly or extends beyond the intended area, it can compress nerves and disrupt normal blood flow, leading to pain, swelling, and discomfort at the surgical site. In contrast, while improper anesthesia can contribute to discomfort during a procedure, it is more likely to influence pain levels during surgery rather than defining post-operative pain as a common issue. Infection at the surgical site can certainly lead to pain and complications but usually manifests after some time and depends on various factors, including how well the site is kept clean and monitored. Bone loss during surgery can influence the outcomes and healing but is less directly connected to immediate post-operative pain compared to the mechanical effects of an over-extended pack.
